ESSAY

Explanation:

Daedalus is a character from Greek mythology, a famous artist and craftsman known for his numerous inventions, as well as for building the Labyrinth on Crete. He is also known as the father of Icarus; he made wings for Icarus and himself to escape from Crete by air together. The story of Icarus and Daedalus is told in a Roman source, Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”; the Isle of Crete was blocked by the order of King Minos, but Daedalus wanted to return to his home, Athens. Thus, he devised the wings for himself and his young son; but the son disobeyed his instructions and sank in the sea.1 It is stated that Daedalus is a symbol of the ability of Athenians to invent and solve extremely complicated problems. Making The Labyrinth is one of the embodiments of this ability; creating the wings enabling people to fly is another.

Artemis

Artemis is the Ancient Greek goddess of wild animals and hunting, of fertility and virginity; she is also the embodiment of femininity. This daughter of Zeus and Leto is usually portrayed as a huntress with a bow and arrows, sometimes accompanied by a deer. According to one of the myths, Agamemnon angered Artemis during the Troyan War by slaying one of her animals. Agamemnon was advised to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to appease the goddess.2 Apparently, the Ancient Greeks, who very much disliked human sacrifice, believed Artemis to be rather cruel and ruthless if they thought she would wish Iphigenia to be sacrificed. That the goddess of femininity and virginity possessed such traits is not surprising; it was common in that (rather a sexist) culture to think of women as of ruthless and cunning beings.

Medusa

Medusa, a mythical being of the Ancient Greece, was one of the three of the Gorgon sisters, the only one mortal among them. She had the appearance of a hideous human female with snakes instead of hair; her gaze was able to turn anyone into stone permanently. Ovid tells the story of how Perseus beheaded Medusa in order to protect her mother from Polydectes, who fell in love with her and whom Perseus believed to be dishonorable.3

Numerous gods helped Perseus and equipped him for battle so that he could slay Medusa. Thus, Perseus killed one woman in order to protect another. Interestingly, late classical myths state that Medusa was at first a beautiful woman who offended Athena and was transformed into a beast of malevolence, an embodiment of female rage. Thus, Medusa was first abused by one woman, and then slain to save another, which, perhaps, also shows the attitude of the Ancient Greek (male-dominated) culture towards women.

Heracleidae

Heracleidae, or Heraclids, were the numerous descendants of the Ancient Greek hero Heracles and his multiple consorts. The words are most often used to denote the descendants of the oldest son of Heracles, Hyllus, one of the generations of whom were able to capture the Peloponnesus, a land once owned by Heracles. According to Euripides, the children of Heracles were pursued by the Herald Copreus working for King Eurystheus, who was responsible for many of Heracles’ problems and thought the hero’s sons would take revenge on him.4 The play finishes with the death of Eurystheus; other myths state that Heraclids would recapture the Peloponnesus later. According to some historical hypotheses, the recapture is associated with the Dorian invasion, which might have taken place in the latter half of the 2nd millennium B.C. These hypotheses reflect the fact that some historical events often might stand beyond the stories told in myths and beliefs.

Seven against Thebes

Seven against Thebes is the third (and the only one extant) part of Aeschylus’ trilogy about Oedipus; it was first staged in 467 B.C. The story starts when Polynices leads an army to Thebes in order to take power from Eteocles; both are sons of Oedipus, who married his own mother and, having learned of it, left their children to divide the kingdom via bloodshed. According to the story, Polynices leads six other heroes to attack and capture Thebes; there are seven bloody battles, in which most of the heroes die.

Tydeus, a fallen hero, even eats the brains of Melanippus.5 Noteworthy, the story was written circa 467 B.C., approximately 10-12 years after the unsuccessful invasion of Xerxes supported by Thebes; thus, Thebes was rather disliked by the other polises. It is, therefore, not surprising that the cruelty, greed, and other adversities of human nature are depicted as attributes of Thebans.

Prisoners lived in prison cells but were allowed to engage in hobbies and do their cooking. The reason for letting them have hobbies and cook was because it made them easier to control. In June 1943, the internees were moved to INS facilities, but German POWs were kept in the Stringtown facility for the remainder of the war. They were later moved to army sights. The facility was closed by the army in 1943. Near the end of the war, the facility may have been used as a state hospital, but it was returned to its original prison in 1945. Choose one of the main ideas Emerson develops about Transcendentalism in "Self-Reliance." Write an essay of at least two hundered words exploring this idea. Cite examples from the essay.

Answers

Answer:

Essay on "Self-Reliance."

Explanation:

The main ideas Emerson develops about Transcendentalism in "Self-Reliance." is that each individual has to avoid conformity and false consistency, and have to follow his own instincts and ideas in order to become successful. Every person has to be self reliance means that he or she should not depend on other people, he or she should only depends on itself so in this way they get success in their professional as well as personal life. Those people that depends on other people gets difficulties in their professional life and they will never get successful.

Answer:

One of the primary ideas that Emerson quite often writes about and develops about Transcendentalist in "Self-Reliance" is the idea of nonconformity in order to attain individuality. In my personal opinion, I believe that these ideas were very important and relevant to today's society especially considering the push from social media to force everyone into a box in which they cannot or are afraid to show their true selves. It is also paramount for any and every individual to focus on information that is true rather than misinformation and lies that are told in order to prevent oneself from finding who they really are as a person and what they believe in. In the end, it is someone's own decision who they want to be and what beliefs that they wish to have. Today's society has a major issue, especially on social media, with simply following along to whatever is popular at the moment, and many people who do not conform to this are shunned and pressured to become like everyone else. Therefore, it is important for one to reject what is most popular and not to conform to the beliefs, ideas, or personality that everyone else wants them to adopt.

In the twentieth century, this approach changed—as did several key elements of the address. Woodrow Wilson resumed personal delivery of the speech in 1913. In 1923, Calvin Coolidge expanded the audience of the address to the nation by delivering the speech over the radio. In 1947, Harry Truman’s speech was the first televised State of the Union address. George W. Bush became the first president to have his address transmitted live on the Internet in 2002 (see Figure 1).

Based on the details in paragraph 3, what generalization can be made about twentieth-century presidents and the State of the Union address?

A. Most presidents treated the address as a chance to comfort the public.

B. Most presidents used the address to quell the criticism of opponents.

C. Most presidents saw the address as a way to maintain tradition.

Most presidents saw the address as a way to maintain tradition.

D. Most presidents made the address as accessible as possible.

Answers

Answer:

D. Most presidents made the address as accessible as possible.

Explanation:

According to paragraph 3, it is described how twentieth century presidents of America made changes in their State of the Union address from Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and George Bush to make the address as accessible as possible.

Therefore, based on the details in paragraph 3, the generalization that can be made about twentieth-century presidents and the State of the Union address is that most presidents made the address as accessible as possible.

Read the paragraph from The Hot Zone and the summary that follows it.

Once the cells in a biological machine stop working, it can never be started again. It goes into a cascade of decay, falling toward disorder and randomness. Except in the case of viruses. They can turn off and go dead. Then, if they come in contact with a living system, they switch on and multiply. The only thing that "lived" inside this monkey was the unknown agent, and it was dead, for the time being. It was not multiplying or doing anything, since the monkey's cells were dead. But if the agent touched living cells, Nancy's cells, it would come alive and begin to amplify itself. In theory, it could amplify itself around the world in the human species.
Summary of central idea: It is petrifying that even if viruses are dead, they have the potential to "come alive.”

Which changes should be made to improve this summary of the paragraph’s central idea? Select two options.

Remove the phrase “It is petrifying” because it expresses a personal feeling.
Include the detail that there was a dead virus living inside the monkey.
Remove the detail that viruses can come alive even if they are dead.
Add the phrase “and spread throughout the human species” to the end of the statement to more fully express the central idea.
Add a personal opinion about what may happen if the virus does “come alive.”

Answers

Answer:

In a monkey's body, the only thing that "lived" was the unknown agent, and it was dead. If the agent touched living cells, Nancy's cells, it would come alive and begin to amplify itself. In theory, it could amplify itself around the world in the human species. It is petrifying that even if viruses are dead, they have the potential to "come alive," says Dr. David Perry.

The changes that should be made to improve this summary of the paragraph's central idea are: Remove the phrase "it is petrifying" because it expresses a personal feeling, and add the phrase "and spread throughout the human species" to the end of the statement to more fully express the central ideas of the first and fourth options.

What is the central idea of the summary?

The original summary of the paragraph's central idea included the phrase "It is petrifying that even if viruses are dead, they have the potential to 'come alive.'" This phrase expresses a personal feeling of fear, but it is not directly supported by the information presented in the paragraph. While the paragraph does mention the potential danger of a dead virus coming into contact with living cells and multiplying, it does not explicitly state that this is a petrifying or scary idea.

Hence, the changes that should be made to improve this summary of the paragraph's central idea are: Remove the phrase "it is petrifying" because it expresses a personal feeling, and add the phrase "and spread throughout the human species" to the end of the statement to more fully express the central ideas of the first and fourth options.

Based on paragraphs 18-20 of the article, what is one reason that Maathai's
movement was successful?

A. She recognized the frustration of people on both sides of a conflict.

B. She followed established rules despite the impatience of the public.

C. She continued to create awareness despite efforts by others to
intimidate her.

D. She addressed the concerns of others through her trust in the
democratic process.

18. Maathai and the Green Belt Movement led high-profile
campaigns to save Kenya's forests and green spaces. In 1991, for
instance, the movement saved Nairobi's Uhuru Park from an
enormous high-rise to be built by the ruling party. The dictatorship was
still strong, and not amused. For their boldness, Maathai and Green
Belt colleagues were subjected to stints in jail and harassment,
including death threats. Many nights, Maathai stayed in safe houses..

19 And yet, she was not put off. "It is as clear as day. You cannot
protect the environment if you do not have democratic governance [or]
democratic space," she says.

20 In 1992, partly as a result of Maathai's activism, Kenya legalized
opposition political parties. In subsequent years, the regime, while still
corrupt and cantankerous, showed signs of cracking. After a series of
violent confrontations with Maathai and the Green Belt Movement
over Karura Forest in 1999, the regime abandoned its illegal
development plans. The forest stands today, vast and green, on the
edge of Nairobi's throbbing streets.
